Neurodivergence + Sexuality Subject Matter Expert

As a sex therapist, sexuality educator, specialized in autism/adhd + BDSM/kink + women, she serves as an experienced lecturer, presenter, and professor of human sexuality, ethics, research, psychopharmacology, and neuroanatomy.  Dr. Flores allows her expertise and humanity to shine when working with clients who fall within this intersection of identities.

Here are a few presenting experiences she works with often:

  • Intersection of neurodivergence and sexuality.

  • Neurodivergence-related assessment (Autism, ADHD, trauma-acquired neurodivergence).

  • Deconstruction of shame (i.e., religious, historical messaging, societal, sexual, bullying, abuse/neglect, etc.)

  • Adult Kinetic Cognitive Styles (ADHD) and/or Autistic characteristics - acceptance and navigation while existing in a societal framework that requires forced impositions of conformity.

  • Relationships/Individuals who wish to cultivate meaning, intimacy, and authenticity.

  • Individuals who have experienced 'intervention trauma' or medical gaslighting/trauma.

  • Sexual anxiety, shame free sex-education, and erotic marginalization

  • Childhood trauma, adult inner child work, adult 'play' therapy (reclamation of wonder)

  • BDSM/Kink related healing support.

  • Support for those who want more depth and detail associated with their brain style (MIGDAS-2 assessment).

  • Support for clients who want an official diagnosis for PTSD/CPTSD through gentle assessment (LEC5, ACE, CAPS-5, to name a few).

Reclamation of Wonder: Inner Child Trauma Therapy

Dr. Flores is trained in humanistic sandtray as well as Play Therapy. She works with adults who have experienced childhood abuse, neglect, sexual harm leading to reactive attachment, PTSD, CPTSD, and trauma-acquired neurodivergence. She takes an approach that invites the rediscovery of play, curiosity, and imagination. Her clients were often robbed of their childhood. Dr. Flores works with clients as they rediscover corrective emotional experiences through play, creativity, curiosity, and, most importantly, a sense of wonder.

An inner child therapeutic approach is trauma-infused, neuro-affirming, and humanistic. Here are some signs that your inner child may have unmet needs and needs healing:

  • Increased / high reactivity (i.e., 0 - 100 in seconds)

  • Overvaluing independence across contexts, especially in relationships

  • Chronic perfectionism

  • Ongoing mental health concerns, such as:

    • depression

    • anxiety

    • lack of intrinsic motivation

    • avoidance / urges to isolate

    • sleep difficulties / nightmares

    • emotional dysregulation

    • self-destructive behaviors

    • low self-esteem / self-worth

"It is necessary to own and honor the child who we were in order to love the person we are. And the only way to do that is to own that child's experiences, honor that child's feelings, and release the emotional grief energy that we are still carrying around."  - Robert Burney

Healing is relational.

When Dr. Robyn Flores is recruited to support partnerships, she uses a 4-R approach: Rupture, Reflect, Repair, Reconnect. This sequence encourages couples and partners of all types of relationships to gain awareness of the emotional, action, and thought cycles that often lead to distress within their relationships.

Awareness            Insight           Evolvement

The stories partners share in therapy allow Dr. Flores to promote new narratives while using carefrontation to challenge the narratives that no longer serve the relationship nor the partners. This approach allows for the deconstruction of systems and values that, well, you never asked to have. Imagine having an old family heirloom passed down to you. Perhaps it is a vase that is a bit out of place on the mantle in your living room; however, it was passed onto you, and you feel obligated to hang onto it. Like this heirloom, values are often passed down through generations without question or critical thought. Awareness creates insight creates evolvement.

I Feel + I Need + Request

Communicating needs, wants, and desires is an important consideration in relationships. When is the last time you assessed your needs with your partner(s)? Dr. Flores cultivates a space for collaboration, connection, and compassion when working with more than one person in the room.
